House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer says 72% of Americans support the children’s health insurance bill vetoed by President Bush.

Hoyer also used his party’s weekly radio message to tout the measure’s bipartisan backing. He quotes Republican Senator Pat Roberts, who said the president’s concerns with the bill are wrong.

On Wednesday, the president vetoed the bill, which would have added $35 billion to the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. Bush has said he’d support a $5 billion increase.

Hoyer said America’s doctors, nurses and children’s advocates also back the measure. Democrats are planning to try for a veto override later this month.
